Clean up Australia Day

Clean up Australia Day is the most well-known effort by clean up Australia. It is held on the first Sunday of March every year.

The first Clean up Australia Day was in 1990. This campaign was initiated by Australian builder and solo yachtsman, Ian Kiernan. When Ian competed in the BOC challenge solo around- the-world yacht race, he was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish that he continually encountered in areas. After the competition, Ian organised a community event-clean up of Sydney Harbour. This activity happened in 1989 and received an enormous public response. People wanted to do something that made a difference to their environment.

When volunteers attend the activity on Clean up Australia Day, they need to bring some items such as are plastic gloves and bags etc.

Anyone can be involved in this activity, you can register for a clean up site on the Internet or call 1800 282 329 or you can  just join a clean up site on the day.

On the 2012 Clean Up Australia Day there is a activity in the Rockdale City Council Government Area. All volunteers will be organised by Rockdale City Council. Volunteers need to clean up local parks, waterways, beaches throughout Rockdale City.
